The main character of this strip is named Emi. As you may have noticed, the artist’s name is also Emi. Real creative, I know. Emi (the fictional character) lives in a Chicago apartment she used to share with a boyfriend until he committed suicide. She works as a waitress on the campus of the college she recently graduated and has no real plans for her immediate future. She spends a lot of time at her local bar, and even more time talking to the apparition of her deceased boyfriend.

Owlex is Emi’s recently deceased boyfriend. He splits his time between hanging out with Emi, and spending time in Hell. Being a suicide, Hell requires Owlex to spend the majority of his time haunting his loved ones on “the surface,” but he still needs to check in every now and then. He begrudgingly writes the pop culture column for a suicide-run newspaper in Hell called The Daily Noose. At this point in the comic, the only ones on “the surface” who can see him are Emi and animals (like the cats) so Owlex gets pretty lonely most of the time.

Kevin is Owlex’s assigned roommate in the Hell dormitory. Hell is run a lot like college and Kevin is very active in his fraternity, Zeta Zeta Zeta: The Fraternity of the Beast. Before his death Kevin was a corrupt businessman and is mostly in Hell due to a lifetime of tax fraud, money laundering and perhaps killing a few hookers. Whoops. In his free time he enjoys beer pong, womanizing and playing video games (particularly Halo). He fond of Owlex not only because he’s a pretty cool roommate but also because the fact that he’s a suicide leave the room vacant pretty often and allows Kevin to bring home women pretty much whenever he wants.

Kyle Kenwood is Emi’s friend. She lives in the apartment above Emi’s with her boyfriend, Ben, and their many dogs. Kyle works at the Paws & Claws Animal Shelter and is a bit of an animal rights activist…not the vegan, flyering-for-PETA type of activist but the pissed-off, wants-to-claw-the-eyes-out-of-dog-abusers kind of animal rights activist. She watches a lot of Animal Cops and yells at the TV. She hangs out a lot at the bar with Emi. Her signiture drink is the martini, because, you know, bitch has class.

Eric Logan is the leader of The Triplets, only because he’s the most outgoing. He live in a apartment with his counterparts, Derek and Marek. Eric likes beer and black metal and Magic: The Gathering. He is a little older than his two roommates and is currently writing a dissertation about the Vikings that he has already spent several years on and may or may not ever get around to finishing. His favorite comic strip is Nemi. Eric shaves to cover up the fact that he is balding terribly quickly.

Marek Humbolt is a member of “the Triplets” and shares an apartment with Eric and Derek. He’s relatively quiet but get’s pretty competitive when playing games on Game Nights, especially when he’s winning against Derek. Marek has an online girlfriend that he met in a chatroom, who turned out to be Eric’s teenaged sister, Sadie. Marek and Sadie have never met in person. While Marek openly listens to post-rock and ambient electronic music, he has a more private love for ska. He is secretly the frontman for the band Ritalin Reggie and the Short Attention Spans which, until very recently, Eric and Derek were unware of.

Derek Wicker is the youngest member of the triplets. A college student, neither of his roommates or so-called friends have ever bothered to ask him what his major is. Derek has an over-the top sense of style that involves a lot of make-up and mesh undergarments. His musical tastes range from industrial rock and japanoise to glam rock of the 1980s. Derek is nerdtastically good at Magic: the Gathering, which his roommates play on their Game Nights, and famously bad at skateboarding but he tries his best anyhow.

Ellis Pentwater is a be-dreadlocked hippie chick who graduated college with Emi and, like so many of Emi’s classmates, has stuck around town. Ellis has very stong opinions on many topics, including the blasphemy of thanksgiving and the existence and presence of Owlex’s spirit at Timmy’s Tavern. Ellis doesn’t hang out with the group much, but is often found at the bar and shows up at the occasional party. She’s a little weird but a necessary component of the friend group, if only because her boyfriend, Peanut Dan, sells everyone else weed.

Karl and Tigerbeat are Emi’s cats. Those also happen to be the names of the creator’s cats, but like I said before, this isn’t the most creative story in the world so deal with it. As of this point in the story, Karl and Tigerbeat are the only characters besides Emi who can see Owlex, and they don’t care for him much. The cats find the dead to be off-putting and for that reason spend a lot of time hiding under the furniture in Emi’s apartment. They don’t make appearances in the strip all that often.
